The capacity-building component is supporting the State Project Management Unit under Environment Department (which is the secretariat for the West Bengal SCZMA), Calcutta University (for research on microbial biodiversity), and the Institute of Environmental Studies and Wetland Management (for geomorphologic and wetland research).
Capacity Building of Calcutta University
The objective of the programme is to strengthen the laboratory facilities of Calcutta University for addressing the following issues:
1. Microbes present in the substrate sediments of Sundarban and their contribution towards maintaining the mangrove system
2. Contribution of mangrove forest towards controlling global warming through carbon sequestration in the forest.
Capacity Building for Institute of Environmental Studies and Wetland Management (IESWM)
The objective of the programme is to enhance the research capacity of IESWM to that of a national level institute in order to undertake coastal wetland, ecology and climate change related studies.
West Bengal State ICZM Capacity Building Programme intends to meet the training needs of the participating government departments and other stakeholders towards better understanding and implementation of ICZM Plan. It further aims towards better conservation and utilisation of coastal resources for sustainable development of the coastal region.
